Essential Oils + Dogs

While essential oils can provide numerous benefits for humans, it’s important to remember that they can be toxic to pets, especially dogs. Some essential oils can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, and even liver damage in dogs. Therefore, it’s crucial to always do your research and consult with a veterinarian before using essential oils on or around your dog.

That being said, there are some essential oils that are considered safe for dogs when used properly and in moderation. Here are a few examples:

  1. Lavender essential oil: Lavender oil is known for its calming and soothing properties, and can be beneficial for dogs who experience anxiety or stress. It can also help with skin irritations and insect bites. To use lavender oil on your dog, dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil, and apply a small amount to their fur or bedding.
  2. Chamomile essential oil: Chamomile oil is also known for its calming properties and can be helpful for dogs who experience anxiety or digestive issues. It can also be beneficial for skin irritations and inflammation. Like lavender oil, chamomile oil should be diluted with a carrier oil before use.
  3. Frankincense essential oil: Frankincense oil has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, and may be helpful for dogs who suffer from arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. It can also help promote relaxation and calmness. However, it should be used with caution and only under the guidance of a veterinarian.
  4. Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint oil can be helpful for dogs who suffer from digestive issues or nausea. However, it should only be used in small amounts and diluted with a carrier oil, as too much peppermint oil can be toxic to dogs.
  5. Cedarwood essential oil: Cedarwood oil may be helpful for repelling fleas and ticks, and can also help with skin irritations and inflammation. However, it should be used with caution and only in small amounts, as it can be toxic if ingested by dogs.

It’s important to note that not all dogs will react the same way to essential oils, and some may have allergies or sensitivities to certain oils. Always start with a small amount and monitor your dog closely for any adverse reactions. Additionally, never apply essential oils directly to your dog’s skin, and avoid using oils around their eyes, nose, and mouth. When in doubt, consult with a veterinarian before using essential oils on or around your dog.
